Participation in Extracurricular Activites in Approved/Accredited Schools To Publications / Articles - Participation in Extracurricular Activites in Approved/Accredited Schools

Exempt (Home) school student involvement in extracurricular activities in approved/accredited schools has been a hot topic for more than a decade.  Various bills have been submitted to the Legislature, but nothing has made it into law.  At this time LB 58 remains in the Education Committee - pending action that may move it to General File and Floor Debate.  With nothing ensconced in law, the Nebraska School Activities Association (NSAA) can make changes as they will.

In the meantime, the NSAA is on the move.  The representative assembly met on April 7, 2017 and voted to allow exempt (home) school students to participate in NSAA-sponsored activites if they take a minimum of 10 credits (2 classes).  This proposal still needs to go before all NSAA member schools for a final vote...we are waiting to hear the results of that vote.  If the decreased class requirement is approved, this will improve access for exempt school students who wish to participate in extracurricular activities.  This is a positive change.  We do not know if there are any other items (or limitations) attached to their proposed bylaw changes.  Read Lincoln Journal Star article.

There is a down side to no legislation being passed--next week we will discuss the nuances of the NSAA continuing to "hold the stick" on directing how exempt school students can participate in extracurricular activies.
